Dialing In Water Parameters for Caridina Shrimp

Dialing In Water Parameters for Caridina Shrimp

Caridina shrimp โ€” Crystal Red, Crystal Black, Tiger, Blue Bolt โ€” need softer, more acidic water than Neocaridina. Getting this right up front will save you a lot of frustration.

Target ranges

ParameterTarget
pH6.2โ€“6.8
GH4โ€“6
KH0โ€“2
TDS100โ€“150 ppm
Temperature68โ€“74ยฐF (20โ€“23ยฐC)

Substrate matters

An active, buffering substrate designed for shrimp will hold pH low and stable far better than inert gravel or sand. Expect to replace it every 12โ€“18 months as its buffering capacity is exhausted.

Acclimation

Caridina are far less tolerant of sudden parameter swings than Neocaridina. Drip acclimate new arrivals over 60โ€“90 minutes, and avoid large water changes in the weeks after introducing new stock.

Watch for

  • Molting problems (usually low GH or calcium)
  • Lethargy after water changes (TDS swing)
  • Reduced coloration (often stress or a diet lacking astaxanthin)

Patience pays off โ€” a stable Caridina tank can run for years with only routine top-offs and small weekly water changes.
